Mercedes ML350 Battery Replacement in Dubai

Open the bonnet of an ML350 and there is no battery to be found. Mercedes put the starter battery under the front passenger seat and the small auxiliary unit in the rear cargo area, which is why this model confuses owners and roadside fitters alike. It also explains the car's oddest symptom, a vehicle that will not come out of Park. Battery Zone UAE knows both positions, carries both parts, and fits them where the car is standing in Dubai.

Which One Is Yours

Mercedes ML350 by Generation

Where the batteries live depends on the body code, and on this model that is the single most useful thing to establish before anyone starts lifting panels.

W1642005 - 2011

The second-generation ML with the 3.5 litre V6. Batteries away from the engine bay, and on many cars the auxiliary unit is reached only after the main battery is out of the way.

W1662011 - 2015

The third generation. Starter battery under the front passenger seat; the small auxiliary moves to the right-hand side of the rear cargo area behind a trim panel. Air suspension and other options change what else is back there.

W166 as GLE2015 - 2019

The same vehicle renamed GLE in the 2015 facelift, with the same two-battery layout. An owner searching for ML information will find it applies to their car almost entirely.

About us

The Car That Will Not Leave Park

It is one of the more alarming things an ML can do. The engine runs, the dashboard looks normal, and the gear selector simply refuses to move out of Park, or the car reports a fault and immobilises itself. Most owners assume a gearbox or selector failure, which is an expensive assumption.

In a large number of cases the cause is the small auxiliary battery in the rear cargo area. That unit exists to hold up the control units during starting, when the main battery's voltage dips as the starter motor pulls its current. When the auxiliary can no longer do that, modules reset or never properly wake, and the electronic gear selector is one of the first systems to refuse to play.

The important part for an owner is that replacing the main battery does nothing for this. Battery Zone UAE has been called to ML350s that had a new main battery fitted elsewhere the week before and were behaving exactly as badly afterwards. Testing both units takes a few minutes and settles which one is responsible.

Why Battery Zone UAE

How Battery Zone UAE Approaches an ML350

An older SUV where the diagnosis saves more money than the part does.

Testing both batteries on a Mercedes ML350 in Dubai
Both Parts on the VanThe full-size AGM and the small auxiliary unit, so whichever has failed is replaced on the first visit rather than ordered for a second.
Seat and Cargo Trim Handled ProperlyThe passenger seat base and the rear panel come apart in a particular order. Done carelessly, clips break and trim never sits right again.
Alternator MeasuredOn a vehicle of this age a tired alternator is common, and it will flatten a new battery within weeks if nobody checks.
Selector Tested Before We GoIf the complaint was a car stuck in Park, the technician confirms it shifts properly on the new battery before leaving.

ML350 Warning Signs Worth a Free Test

This model tends to complain electrically well before it refuses to start.

A refusal to shift out of Park, intermittently at first

Warning messages on start-up that clear once the engine is running

The air suspension taking a long time to raise the car after it has stood

Interior electronics resetting after the vehicle has been parked overnight

A crank that is noticeably slower when the car has been in the sun all afternoon

Either battery older than two years in Dubai conditions

How it works

Your ML350 Visit, Step by Step

1

Year and What It Is Doing

W164 or W166, and what the car is doing. Stuck in Park points one way, a slow crank points the other.

2

Technician to the Car

Anywhere in Dubai, 24 hours a day, with both batteries already on board.

3

Each Battery Checked Apart

Main battery under cranking load, auxiliary on its own, plus charging output and standing draw.

4

Replaced and Verified

The failed unit fitted, the main battery registered to the vehicle, messages cleared, trim refitted as it was.

Questions

Mercedes ML350 Battery Questions

The starter battery is under the front passenger seat, reached by lifting the seat base. The small auxiliary battery sits in the rear cargo area on the right-hand side behind a trim panel. There is no battery in the engine bay at all, which catches out a great many people.

Very often because the small auxiliary battery has failed. It supports the control units while the starter is drawing current, and when it cannot, the electronic gear selector is one of the first things to refuse. Replacing the main battery does not fix it; replacing the auxiliary usually does.

Yes, and they are at opposite ends of the vehicle. A full-size AGM under the front passenger seat does the starting and running; a small auxiliary unit in the rear cargo area supports the electronics during a start. They fail independently and they produce different symptoms.

Largely, yes. Mercedes renamed the W166 ML as the GLE in the 2015 facelift without changing the two-battery arrangement, so an owner of an early GLE will find the ML layout and symptoms apply to their vehicle too.

Yes. Battery Zone UAE does the entire job at your location anywhere in Dubai, including lifting the passenger seat base or the cargo trim and registering the new main battery to the vehicle. If the car cannot move, we come to where it is standing.

Only if both test poorly. They have different lifespans and different workloads, and there is no reason to pay for a healthy one. That said, if an ML is a decade old and both units are original, replacing the pair together often works out cheaper than two separate call-outs.
